WFAE documentary recognized by journalist group

July 6. The Society of Professional Journalists recognized a WFAE documentary by David Boraks about asbestos contamination at an old mill in Davidson. The hour-long documentary about failed attempts to redevelop the mill received a Sigma Delta Chi Award.

Located in a historically Black neighborhood, the failures may have protected nearby residents from gentrification.

“Asbestos Town” explored tensions between Black residents and town leaders, as well as possible solutions.

According to the judges, “Asbestos Town” is a “great example of the kind of quality work that can happen when a talented reporter gets to cover a beat for more than a decade.”
