Feb. 16 Uwharrie Capital Corp, parent company for Bank of Stanly, Anson Bank and Trust and Cabarrus Bank and Trust, reported net income for the year ended Dec. 31, 2011 of $900,000, an increase of $187,000 compared to the prior year. Net income available to common shareholders was $255,000 or 3 cents per common share this year compared to $68,000 or 1 cent per common share for 2010. Net income available to common shareholders reflects the payment of dividends on preferred stock issued by the Company. At Dec. 31, 2011 the company had total assets of $527 million. |

Cato fellow to discuss rail |
Jan. 21 The Town of Cornelius will host a special meeting 9 am Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the Community Room of Town Hall to hear an analysis of the Red Line by a senior fellow of the Cato Institute, a Libertarian think tank in Raleigh. Randal O’Toole will discuss the business/finance plan behind the proposed 25-mile freight-commuter line between Mooresville and Charlotte. There will also be an open forum to allow elected officials, community leaders, residents and business owners to ask questions. Elected officials from Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville and Huntersville and Charlotte as well as Mecklenburg and Iredell counties have been invited. The Cato Institute, which criticized both Barack Obama and John McCain in 2008, has weighed in on everything from urban growth and public land uses to the Iraq War and Social Security. O'Toole has written two books relating to tarnsportation: "The Vanishing Automobile and Other Urban Myths" and "Gridlock: Why We're Stuck in Traffic and What to Do About It." The Town of Cornelius, in a press release, said O'Toole wrote Cato Policy Analysis No. 663 in 2010, "Defining Success: The Case against Rail Transit." |
